Never a Good Time

We all arrive at a time when we reach inflection points in life and important decisions need to be made based on family, future aspirations and the career we have built. When we reach these critical watershed moments its never easy, but carefully considering all elements of the current situation leads us in a new direction. After spending decades in a career, we find ourselves much older now then when we started and time sure does move quickly.

I have had the distinct honor to serve as Town/County Supervisor for the Town of Clifton Park since 2000. Working with so many fantastic people over the years has made the experience very rewarding. Our long list of accomplishments at the Town and County and current standing across all metrics at both organizations is something everyone; elected officials, employees and hard-working volunteers should be very proud of as we reflect on the passing years. I have found myself reflecting more in the last few years than I have in the previous two decades. Working on multiple topics at one time. accomplishing a goal and immediately moving to the next solution has always been the focus we have brought to the job. This process hasn’t changed, but as we personally find ourselves taking more time to reflect, it is a sign of a change in psychological outlook. I have always viewed this position as a job. It’s an important job and a public job, but at the end of the day it’s a job. The voters have provided me the opportunity to do the job on a series of 14 two-year contracts. Perform and you may earn another contract. If you don’t perform the short-term contract may expire, permanently. With all the noise around public positions, which has increasingly grown over the years with social media and the rapid news cycle, I have always preached focus to our teams. It is easy to lose focus, and I want to make sure I practice what I preach in this regard. As opportunities and interests in my private life grows, it is imperative this reality be taken under consideration when making future decisions. I can’t remember a day, including holidays, where my wife and I have not done at least a few hours of work. We enjoy working and I can’t imagine a time in the future when we won’t be reviewing new opportunities and building on current interests.

I will not be seeking a 15th term as Town/County Supervisor in 2026. I agreed to run in 2025, knowing the new term would be a one-year term as opposed to the historical two-year term. Although I completely disagree with the altering of the election schedule, it was a more enticing time frame based on my personal interests. I will not be completely leaving the scene, and we have no plans to move (two most asked questions lately).

It’s never a good time to leave for the many people who depend on you and people who want you to remain in office. For others, this news is 27 years overdue. The election results in 2025 were very close and disappointing. However, I was in the minority on the Town Board for a lengthy period a few years ago and I have been in the minority on the County Board Supervisors for several years. I have been a target of the opposing party for three decades and have received the ire of leaders in my own party on many occasions during my time in office. There’s always another political fight, there’s always another attack on the horizon and there’s always another group who believes they can do better. It’s part of the job and that will never change. My family and I were attacked when I first thought of running for office, therefore nothing has surprised me through the years.

To say I am very fortunate is an understatement. I have had the honor and privilege to serve my community in this capacity and now I am excited about the future. My family was never involved in government or elected office, and I have worked tirelessly over the years to fulfill my responsibilities and improve our Town and County. Nothing was given to me. The experience has been rewarding and incredibly satisfying. I want to thank my family, fellow employees at the Town and County, fellow elected officials, community partners and countless hard-working volunteers for their effort through the years. The relationships are what I will most treasure.

Last week I was supported, on a bi-partisan basis, by my colleagues on the Saratoga County Board of Supervisors to serve as Chairman for the fourth time. Therefore, 2026 will continue to be very busy and challenging. There’s nothing I enjoy more than a challenge.

Thank you to the people of Clifton Park who have provided their confidence in us over these many years. Your support has been very humbling, and we have never wavered in our personal commitment to earn your trust and exceed your expectations.

May God bless you all!
